石虎位於食物鏈的最頂端,在生態系中屬於指標物種,如果給予足夠的保護空間,一些我們看不見或尚不知道的物種就可以受到良好的保護。依據學者的調查目前石虎的數量約600隻左右,根據Shaffer提出的最小存活族群數,長期而言,族群中至少要有500隻個體,才足以保持族群的遺傳變異性。目前石虎面臨的威脅為人為開發所產生的棲息地減少與破碎化等,石虎的棲息地是否應予以開發或該加以保育?土地開發的價值與棲地保育的價值孰重孰輕?國民信託運動的主旨是為了將良好的環境傳給下一代,日本的龍貓森林、知床森林信託運動都可以看到孩子捐出零用錢只為了買下未來可以使用美好環境的夢想。如果台灣也能為保育石虎棲息地成立一座石虎森林
